Volvox
The video shows a single drop of water on a syringe cannula containing hundreds of Volvox colonies regarded through a microscope at a high magnification. Volvox is a fascinating species of algae where many individual single cells are interconnected and form a colony that acts as one entity.
This can be seen as the beginning of multicellular life.
Also, while it still reproduces by cell division it is one of the first species where death is an integral part of its life cycle. When you take a very close look the small green balls that are the mother Volvox colonies they contain even smaller ones that are growing inside and are the daughter colonies. These can only begin their own life when their mother dies and sets them free… The life cycle begins from anew.
Bio
Jan Rosenboom is 27 years old and has recently completed his PhD in inorganic chemistry. He has been looking through microscopes and taking photos since he was about 15 and is still as fascinated by the small things surrounding us as on the first day.
His main aim is to show people the beauty of nature, even when regarded on a very small scale. His greatest successes include a 4th place in the worldwide photography competition Nikon Small World and various exhibitions. Besides microscopy and photography Jan enjoys climbing and reading.
Das Video zeigt einen einzelnen Wassertropfen auf einer Spritzennadel, die Hunderte von Volvox-Kolonien enthält, die durch ein Mikroskop mit hoher Vergrößerung betrachtet werden. Volvox ist eine faszinierende Algenart, bei der viele einzelne Zellen miteinander verbunden sind und eine Kolonie bilden, die als eine einzige Entität agiert.
Dies kann als der Beginn des vielzelligen Lebens angesehen werden.
Außerdem, obwohl es sich noch durch Zellteilung fortpflanzt, ist es eine der ersten Arten, bei der der Tod ein integraler Bestandteil ihres Lebenszyklus ist. Wenn man genau hinschaut, enthalten die kleinen grünen Kugeln, die die Mutterkolonien von Volvox sind, noch kleinere, die als Tochterkolonien heranwachsen. Diese können erst dann ihr eigenes Leben beginnen, wenn ihre Mutter stirbt und sie freigibt... Der Lebenszyklus beginnt von neuem.

Jan Rosenboom ist 27 Jahre alt und hat kürzlich seine Doktorarbeit in anorganischer Chemie abgeschlossen. Seit er etwa 15 Jahre alt war, schaut er durch Mikroskope und macht Fotos, und seine Faszination für die kleinen Dinge, die uns umgeben, ist noch immer genauso groß wie am ersten Tag.
Sein Hauptziel ist es, den Menschen die Schönheit der Natur zu zeigen, selbst wenn sie auf einer sehr kleinen Skala betrachtet wird. Zu seinen größten Erfolgen zählen der 4. Platz im weltweiten Fotowettbewerb Nikon Small World und verschiedene Ausstellungen. Auf seiner Instagram-Seite @nature.inspiring kann man seine Reise durch das Mikrokosmos verfolgen.
